Religion is outlawed. On Earth and on colonies across the stars, those who cling to their faith are labeled "religious extremists" and forced into re-education camps.

Dex D’Felco never planned on getting involved. He was a rising star in the United Coalition Navy, an ace pilot in command of the “Angels”—the UCN’s most prestigious fighter squadron. But when he learns that a colony of religious refugees is under attack, Dex makes a split-second decision that costs him his once-promising career. Now interstellar fugitives, Dex and the Angels fight to survive against a force more terrifying than any of them could have ever imagined.

Meanwhile, Darik Mason, an ambitious junior executive at JenKore, begins to uncover a dark secret within his company. His search for answers sets him on a collision course with the Angels—with thousands of innocent lives hanging in the balance.

With its exotic locations, high-tech espionage, and thrilling space battles, Flight of the Angels is exhilarating and immersive, setting a bold new standard for religious science fiction.

Since starting our podcast back in 2011, Ben and I have had a lot of requests to read self-published authors’ books. Sometimes the books are bad. Sometimes the books are good. "Flight of the Angels," however, is outstanding. The story behind the creation of the book is as interesting as the book itself. "Flight of the Angels," a novel written by father and son duo, Allan and Aaron Reini, has been in the works for over ten years. We recently had a chance to sit down with the authors and discuss both the book and its creation. For the full interview, check out Episode 221: Interview with the Creators of “Flight of the Angels” on our website.

"Flight of the Angels" is set in a future where all forms of religious expression have been outlawed. In this dystopian society, it has become illegal to practice any religion because it is considered intolerant of others’ beliefs. Christianity, in particular, seems to be specifically hated by the people in power. The universe that the story takes place in is well developed and definitely has the “lived-in” feel that made the original Star Wars so endearing.

This book is full of character development, particularly from one of the point-of-view (POV) characters, Darik Mason. I don’t want to give too much away in this review, but Darik is forced to make choices regarding pursuing his life goals or pursuing what is morally right. It was interesting to see him struggle with identifying what gives him his own self-worth.

Another POV character is Captain Dex D’Felco, the leader of a team of ex-Navy fighter pilots. Their squadron is known as the Angels, which is what gives the book its name. The Angels had to flee when their own government made plans to kill them because of their religious beliefs, so they now help lead and protect a secret colony of Christians in hiding. Because this story is set in the future, interplanetary travel is not a problem. The main group of Christians that we follow has taken refuge on a distant planet.

Not only is Dex aided by his squadron, but also by a mysterious benefactor known only as Baker. The mystery of who Baker really is and why he has chosen to help the hidden colony made every scene he was in very captivating.

For most of the book, Dex’s storyline doesn’t intersect with Darik’s story. I loved that the authors took a gamble and made readers wait for the great payoff when the stories finally started to weave together.

As I stated above, this world is very believable. Beyond that, there was a sense that no character was truly safe, which raised the stakes and made the reading experience engaging.

Although it is often subtle, supernatural powers appear to be at play within this story. There was a true sense of good versus evil within these pages, and I was constantly questioning who was on each side. While there is a resolution to the story that we are following in "Flight of the Angels," there is definitely still a lot more to be learned about what is happening in this world. I highly recommend this book. I can almost guarantee that by the end you will be anxious for more stories from these authors.

I am anxious to read the next book when it comes out. Very intense action. I do wish more characters were listed in the front than just the fighting squadrons. I had to think a few times who they were talking about when they referred to the minor characters.
This book was better than I thought it would be. I came in knowing it was self-published by first time authors and I had my reservations. But it was much, much better than I thought it was going to be. The story was much more complex, the characters were more interesting and not wholly predictable as they are in so much Christian fiction. I'm really looking forward to a sequel.
A gripping read most of the book, could not set it down but 4 stars for a few disappointments and some really critical parts I didn't like.

The backfill near the end of the book was very boring I completely disengaged. Ending left so much questions. Romance didn't develop only was falsely led into it.

Also some parts are just really corny. Like the robot "Are you a Christian" whole ordeal. Lastly, what I hated more than anything was the lack of divine intervention throughout the entire novel. It seems like you go to great lengths to make the book appeal to nonbelievers but later it becomes overburdened by some glaringly Christian bias (nothing wrong with this just I couldn't tell your intentions) and then you don't include any divine intervention. Not even to save a single soul! I mean the name Jesus means "God saves".

Anyways, don't let my scathing review stop you from reading the book, it was none the less fascinating. Must read.
I really liked this book. I looked forward to reading it when I had time and had a hard time putting it down. It is suspenseful and keeps one guessing throughout the book. It has a good plot and a good message.
A great story and an enjoyable book to read, highly recommended. I felt the story was well developed, the characters believable. The authors have done a great job in building a “story universe” that has great potential for a lot more books. I look forward to Hornet’s Nest and many more beyond that.
this book makes a person realize what could happen to Christians in the future. It was fast moving and at times made me sit on t h e edge of my chair. my only negative is I wish there was a sequel to it. This author was imaginative and inventive and yet kept his Christian faith alive in this book. Altogether a great read. I definitely recommend it.
What I liked about this story is that the action scenes were not confusing. Sometimes when authors write action scenes the characters start moving so fast that it gets hard to follow. That doesn't happen here. The best parts are the dog-fighting in space and this book does a great job of immersing the reader into the fight.
I also liked the mystery behind the corporation that one of the characters works for. Darik Mason is the character and he discovers a trail of breadcrumbs that leads him to an awful truth. His interactions with a reluctant helper (a computer programmer/analyst) add a sense of entertainment and a touch of humor to an otherwise serious situation.
Overall a great read. There is only one reason why I didn't give a 5 star review. I wanted to know more about what was up with the twins? That kind of bothered me...I am just glad there is another story in the works (Hornet's Nest!)
This story is worth the purchase and I am glad I spent the time reading it.
